Disconnecting Tips For Executives, Entrepreneurs & You

Laying by the Pool

How do you disconnect? Am I the only one who struggles with this? I tell myself – “stop looking at your phone” or “the day is over, turn it off.” I think at times I’m starting to conquer this obsessive need to stay connected and then I have a relapse.

Part of the purpose of writing this post is to allow me to vent on the subject. Hope you don’t mind and what I share will be a help to you! Here are a few strategies I have been implementing to become proficient at disconnecting:

1. Take a 2-day weekend. I have been so driven to check things off my checklist that I have noticed I am not taking time to relax.
2. Set office hours. That means not checking email, voicemails or text after a certain time of the day.
3. In the morning not looking at my phone until my self-care routine is complete.
4. Being present with whomever I’m having a conversation with.
5. When working on projects, setting my phone to vibrate and turning email reminders off.

Implementing these practices has provided more productive days and happier nights. My family doesn’t complain as much and my energy is stronger. Now the goal will be to plan my vacations as the first priority of my yearly planning segment. I know I can conquer this! By disconnecting we will be able to be more connected when it counts.

Don’t worry if you try calling or emailing and I don’t answer right away, I will be with you shortly. I promise! This is something you can do for clients, family members or staff right now.

Linda’s Success Tips: The Power of Taking a Deep Breath

Linda H. Yates – The Image Energizer shares the power of taking a deep breath and how it will help you be more productive and profitable.

When I was a young woman I had vocal lessons. Yes, singing is a major part of my life still to this day. When you take vocal lessons, a major focus is on how to breathe correctly. Through the years, I have come to realize that it is easy to hold your breath when you are feeling stressed or anxious. Perhaps you have noticed that this happens to you on occasion.

When you feel overwhelmed or something rattles you. Stop, take a deep cleansing breath then move forward. Oxygen provides a multitude of benefits. All of our systems work better when we tune in to how we are breathing.

Linda’s Tips – Know Your Audience

When you have been asked to speak one of the first action items on your list should be to know your audience. By being familiar with your audience you will be able to present relevant, timely and engaging information.

Some of the questions to ask before speaking in front of your speaking opportunity are:

What is the age range of the audience?
What type of professionals?
Are all of the attendees in the same industry?
What are some hot topics going on with the audience at this time?

I made the mistake once of presenting to a group who I thought were Twitter users. As I asked the question about Twitter I got blank stares. Part of my presentation had a segment devoted to Twitter. I had to quickly take that out. If I had asked this question before I got on the stage from the meeting planner I wouldn’t have had to scramble during the presentation.

Getting to know your audience before you step up on the stage will create the framework for a successful presentation. Your audience will fall in love with you and want an encore performance.

Design Your Day

What would the perfect day look like? You have the power to design your day so that your energy is optimal throughout the entire day. One of the secrets to getting that power boost in the afternoon is to take a lunch hour.

You may be tempted to work through your lunch hour rather than taking a break. Managing your time is a skill everybody can learn and implement. It’s often the little things that make the biggest impact.

It may be tempting to keep your head down and not take any breaks. By designing your day with breaks, you will be more productive and energetic throughout the day and into the evening.

With mental and physical breaks, you give your mind time to regenerate. With that reboot, innovation will be easier. With innovation, anything is possible.

You are in control of how you spend your time. You get to make the choice.
