Kicking Doubts

Self-Doubt

How are you kicking your doubts today? The word doubt is not as strong as the word fear. Yet, if you let doubt fill your mind and heart then fear can take over. I’ve heard it said that what you write and speak about is what you are currently struggling with. I am a positive person. I have also struggled with doubt and fear throughout my life and business.

Mindset and controlling your mind are subjects that fascinate me. I guess it is because I believe deep down that nothing is impossible. I believe that you each can achieve more than what you think possible.

When an innovative idea or even a dream comes to mind, it can be easy to dismiss the idea. Letting your doubts form is a surefire way to stopping growth.

Here are some of the doubts that I have:

1. I’m not good enough
2. That is not my reality
3. I need more resources
4. Will those I love approve?
5. Will I have time?

Perhaps you can relate to some or all. Why is it that doubts can creep in? Are you believing or buying into someone else’s doubts and insecurities? If you are to uncover, realize and accomplish your potential then it is critical that you learn to starve your doubts.

Here are five strategies that you can implement:

1. Look at your goal’s morning and night
2. Change negative thoughts to positive affirmations
3. Disengage from naysayers
4. Reflect on past wins
5. Ask “what if” questions

I know that if you integrate these strategies into your life you will be able to accomplish more than you ever dreamed. Kicking doubts will become a skill that will open up energy in every aspect of your life.

Change with Enthusiasm

Change is inevitable. Change greeted with enthusiasm is self-empowering. I’ve reflected on the past several months as changes have twirled around me. My father passed away. I cleaned out my family home and said goodbye to my youth. My oldest son married a woman that has a three-year-old, making me a Grandmama! My youngest entered the army and got engaged. I started a project assisting law enforcement, and we got out of debt. Throughout these changes I felt a multitude of emotions. What a roller coaster of highs and lows!

The constant thread has been my perspective. I am still grieving and I’m humbled at the goodness life has to offer. I heard Stephen Covey once said “people don’t fear change, but rather uncertainty.” That is true. Here are some suggestions on how you can embrace change with enthusiasm:

1. Ask what am I supposed to be learning?
2. What are the positives?
3. What do I need to let go of?

What am I supposed to be learning? This is a question that puts the control in your hands on how you view the changes happening around you. When you ponder what you are learning your mindset is that of a “victor” rather than a “victim.”

What are the positives? Human responses tend to go to the negative rather than the positives. Even if you feel that there aren’t any positives strive to find “what” could be a positive and dwell on that outcome.

What do I need to let go of? Moving through a change by letting go of what could be holding you back becomes the catalyst like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.

Change is exciting, exhilarating and empowering. You have a choice to either embrace or fight. I know that if you put in place these questions in every change that takes your breath away you will grow in confidence. Enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm. Every part of your life is energized.

Living In Gratitude

Living in gratitude is a powerful way to live. Gratitude Journal

The saying “you get what you focus on” is true. If focusing on the good in your life and business brings more, then you have just found the secret to life!

I am grateful for the opportunities I have in my life to grow and learn. As I reflect on my journey it amazes me the thread that has been woven into the tapestry. I grew up in farming country. Going to town meant a 10-mile drive to get groceries and supplies. I am grateful for the opportunity of living where life was full and rich.

My extended family continues to teach me today even though I don’t see them often. I still feel their love and support. If I were to focus on how I miss them especially during the holidays, sadness would fill my heart. Instead I focus on all the lessons I’ve learned from them.

Thomas S. Monson tells us that gratitude in all things is necessary to a rich and abundant life. I have thought a lot about that over the past several months. Showing gratitude even when trials hit has given me increased strength and peace. It may sound counter-intuitive but it will work for you.

What do you have to be grateful for today? I challenge you to write down at least three things. As you use or put in place a gratitude journal your day will feel happier and lighter. More goodness will come to you. I am grateful you have taken time to read my thoughts. I appreciate the opportunity to share my insights with you.

Power of Positive Persuasion

Have you ever tried to get someone to do something they didn’t want to do? Raising children is a prime example of exercising persuasion. I bore three children, two boys and a girl. My eldest, Trevor has always been hard to persuade, convince, and induce. Early in his life, I had to learn certain “tricks” to get him to do what I wanted and needed him to do. As he became a toddler, I worried about how I would get him to give up his pacifier. Everything I did seemed to make him want to hold on to it longer. I tried to convince him that he was a “big boy” and didn’t need his “NUK” anymore. It finally happened during another fun activity, that of toilet training. One day he dropped it in the toilet and boom, he believed the “NUK” was no longer. Like children, your co-workers, colleagues, and customers may be hard to persuade.

Oftentimes when I present I will ask the question – “how many of you are in sales?” a few hands will go up, given the make-up of the group. Are we not all in “sales” of one form or another? Do we not have to persuade, influence and induce many times throughout the day?

As with sales, persuasion can have negative connotations. Your intent is what will define whether you are persuading in a positive way. The individual that you are striving to persuade will decide if it is positive or negative. The following are some strategies to persuade in a positive way:

1. Trust is the foundation principle in getting others to act. If the individual we are trying to persuade doesn’t trust you then your efforts will stymied. Building trust starts with respecting the other person. We build trust by listening for what is not being said. When we trust another person we have a tendency to be loyal. Think about the people you trust the most. Would they try to persuade you to do something you didn’t feel right about? My guess is no, otherwise you wouldn’t be trusting them. Something inside you would hold back trust.

2. Birds of a feather flock together. When we connect or feel like we have some commonality with the other person we are more likely to persuade. The best salespeople are likeable and can get along with every and any personality type.

3. Walking in their moccasins. When we put ourselves in their shoes we will come across as more empathetic and genuine. Showing empathy builds trust.

The power of positive persuasion starts with checking in with our purpose. Your purpose defines everything you do from going to work to achieving your goals. As I get to work with leaders, teams, and individuals I am persuading all the time. I understand why they hire me. They are hiring me to help push them to reach their goals and strategic initiatives. It takes discipline to persuade oneself and be persistent.

You have the power to impact others in a positive way. To impact you will need to rely on others to help you. Your ability to persuade others is a must. It will be the doorway to reaching your individual goals. As you put in place these strategies, others will want to help you. You won’t have to rely on any “tricks” like I had to with Trevor.
