Reflecting – “WOW, I did that!”

Happy-Valentines-Red-Rose-Tracy-Hall

How do you celebrate accomplishing a goal or fulfilling a dream? Do you take time to stop and reflect or do you move on to the next goal? The other day I was going through some files and found my “Wow, I did that!” list. I realized that I hadn’t updated it. Stopping to reflect on your accomplishments is important. It will help motivate you in reaching the new goals that you are setting.

As the year gets ready to wrap up, write down your wins. The power of this reflecting session will unlock the following for you:

1. Joy in achieving your goals.
2. Momentum to keep moving forward with your goals and objectives for the New Year.
3. Reminder to refer to when days may seem dark or discouraging.
4. Proof that you have more potential than you realize.

Reflecting is a necessary tool for keeping that winning edge mindset. You will be able to design your life and business in a way that aligns with your guiding principles.

As I have gone through this exercise, I have experienced the following:
a. Pride and humility at the same time.
b. Gratitude that so much of what I desired to do was possible and achievable.
c. Determination to stretch higher next year.

This is the season for celebration! “Wow, I did that” is something to celebrate, remember and embrace. Take time this next week to reflect on your past accomplishments.

The Future

2012-10-22 12.12.03

What would you like your future to look like? This may be a question that is hard for you to answer. For years, I struggled to articulate what I wanted in life, business and the future.

Now, I can say I know what I want the future to be. Setting goals has always been a part of my DNA. If you have never set a goal in your life I challenge you now to set one. About a month ago I was listening to a speaker that spoke of writing down 101 goals or things to do by the age of 80. I took this challenge. It was a lot of fun to think about all the different areas of my life and list what would be meaningful for me to achieve.

Here are some of the items on my list:
1. Travel to all my Bucket List destinations
2. Be Debt Free
3. Interviewed by Oprah
4. Set up a foundation for youth
5. Own a Jet Ski

As I listed these items I began to visualize them already in my life. I can’t wait to cross them off as each year passes.

At times, planning for the future may be a frightening thought. The future may seem bleak or scary. When you start exercising faith, you will be able to see past the trial right now. There are good things to come. One way to insure positive happenings, is to work on your goals each day.

Your mindset is the key to unlocking a positive future. Take a few minutes and track your thoughts for the past 30 minutes. Were they more positive or negative in nature? If they were negative it is imperative that you start feeding your mind positive thoughts.

Here are a few suggestions to turn negative thoughts around:
1. Count your blessings
2. Smile at a stranger
3. Think about your favorite things

We are what we think about. That is why I have decided that planning and working everyday on my goals is the best strategy to a fulfilling and happy life. Getting your hands dirty

dirtyhands
In order to be an effective leader, you need to be willing to get your hands dirty. Jordan Zimmerman in his book Leading Fearlessly states “… I don’t have to master every skill; I just need to understand them.”

In leading your team, they need to know your expectations. They need to see that you are not above “getting your hands dirty” if needed to accomplish what is expected. Whatever it takes is the attitude of the top leaders. The top leader isn’t always top management.

Years ago, I worked for a CEO in a small business with 4 employees. This CEO was going through a business transition. While going through this stressful time, he hurt his back. Because I saw his vision for the company and believed in it – I sacrificed my will and put aside the attitude of “that’s not in my job description” and went to work in creating as much value as I possibly could. Still to this day, he credits me with the praise that I was the one who kept his business going.

I knew a job had to be done – the company needed my energy, devotion and loyalty. It was rewarding to put aside my pride and add deep lasting value. A true leader will recognize your sacrifice. A true leader is willing to sacrifice all to reach a goal.

You can lead today in whatever situation you are in. Put aside pride and go to work. You will be respected and more opportunities will come your way. An effective leader understands that when things are going great – it took teamwork to drive success and the leader credits the team. You have the power within you to achieve more than you every thought possible.

Lead out and on!

Head Trash

Head Trash - You can eliminate it!

Head Trash – You can eliminate it!

This past week I was networking with a gentleman that admitted he was nervous to get on stage and present to a group of donors and CEOs of major companies in the area. He mentioned that he wasn’t usually nervous to speak in front of groups that were half the size. As he was speaking I was able to change his state by telling him this was head trash.

What are you allowing in your head? You have more power than you realize in controlling your thoughts and reactions to those thoughts. Here are some keys to make certain you are eliminating head trash:

1. Not buying into negative thinking – when you start thinking that you can’t; turn that thought around to “what if” – what if is a possibility statement. Success could be on the other side of that question. My brother shared a great quote he saw “You Can If You will.”

2. Reflect on a past success – when you begin to doubt, go back into your memory bank to a success you experienced. Think about what was going on in your head and copy those feelings and emotions.

3. Take the anxiety and turn it into excitement – rather than stamping out the fear use it to power through the head trash.

We are capable of more than we realize. Just as an athlete trains to make a touchdown or win a race, it all starts in our head. Don’t let head trash stop you from achieving your goals and experiencing opportunities that could move you to the next level. Your winning edge is just a thought away.

Focus in the moment

My beautiful Summer

Twenty-four years ago I gave birth to a beautiful six pound 13 ounce little girl. While delivering my baby girl my focus was in the moment. Nothing could have swayed that focus or diverted my attention. One of the common themes I find in meeting with my clients is the desire and need to focus. I love working with inspirational individuals that push me to be better.

These are some of the steps I have implemented and find that helps me to accomplish more than I thought possible.

1. Set aside time to plan. This step is critical. By doing so it allows for a mind dump. It’s like cleaning out and reorganizing a drawer. When you do so you can find things faster and it opens up space for being creative.

2. Set the timer. Setting a timer on specific tasks allows me to focus on what I need to do at that moment. This is especially important when utilizing social media. By doing this I am creating more discipline and at the end of the day feel like I accomplished more.

3. Turning off the bells and ringers while working on a specific task. I have found that if I turn off email while I’m working on a project be it an hour or three then I’m less distracted and can really focus in the moment. The same holds true for turning my phones to silent during the assigned period.

4. Take breaks. I worked with an incredible Chief Operating Officer who demanded that we each take a full hour lunch break. He led by example. This simple habit created more clarity for the rest of the afternoon. I find that if I have been working for two or three hours and haven’t stretched my legs or gotten a drink of water that I begin to fade in my energy level. Even taking that 10-minute break and focusing on breathing or laughing is a great boost to mental clarity and focus.

5. Create routines and stick to them. You will sleep better if you strive to get to bed and get up at the same time everyday. Planning out and using your calendar will keep you on task and focused. You can always mix it up it is your choice.

Being focused in the moment does not have to be hard. In fact it is liberating. Your energy will generate faster and your mind will be clearer.

Focus in the moment is one of the answers to fulfilling all of your goals and creating a winning edge mindset.
