Never Ending Possibilities

As birthdays, New Years and transitional events such as graduation, job changes, death, marriage, or divorce occur we have choices.

You can either:
a. focus on the negative aspects
b. stir yourself up with worry

or

c. embrace the moment and look for the never ending possibilities and opportunities.

One of the past conferences I presented at had an author who spoke of the possibilities and endless opportunities. When I was listening to this presenter I was awestruck with his passion and love that emanated from his eyes. I felt the power of his words.

Benjamin Zander

We may feel like the world has let us down. If you take a chance and find the possibilities that exist, you will have a happier business and life. Stuff happens and challenges are a part of life, but looking for the possibilities; it is where our internal power muscles will grow and expand.

Often when a New Year approaches it is a great time to take stock of what was accomplished in the past year and what the possibilities are for the next. Those possibilities 9 times out of 10 touch another human being. Staying connected and engaged to influencers and decision makers will speed the potential opportunities along in whatever you decide to pursue.

Social media is an incredible tool, and if used with a well thought plan, can assist in maintaining contact and achieving your goals. The more you give the more you receive. Keep an abundance mentality. Care less about being in control or the perception of losing control. Take more risks. With more risks comes more opportunities, growth and happiness.

I was blessed to achieve a lifelong dream of moving to the beach. I was born and raised on a farm in humble circumstances. I have experienced financial loss and gain, but I knew deep down that achieving this goal of moving to the water was possible, and more importantly, believed to be probable.

I share this with you because I’m a true believer of nothing is impossible. I was raised with this basic principle. I was also raised with a strong work ethic. It has recently occurred to me that as I reach for the next possibility that I should record those goals and dreams that I have achieved. By physically putting pen to paper and reflecting on what I have achieved provides me hope, drive and inspiration on how to achieve the next goals.

You can start on this journey by doing what Benjamin Zander advises, “give yourself an A.” There is no failure – there is only experience. And with that experience comes wisdom. If we have already achieved an “A” then we can be in the moment and engage totally without the pressure or fear of failing.

Lastly, when you experience a challenge or set-back use these two words to turn it around, “how fascinating!”

What possibilities are there for you?

Motivation

How do you find motivation? This has been a question that has been on my mind for the past couple of years. Motivation can come from a variety of people, places and projects. I have to admit that my motivation has wavered. Seeking every day has proved to be a human experiment. There are some days that are easier and more fulfilling than others. The following have helped me:

1. People. In my work several of my days are spent alone. When I am not speaking, coaching, or consulting I am working on my business. The transition from going to an office interacting with others and now not having that need every day has been a hard one for me. I love people. I had to get creative. Facebook Live opened the opportunity for me to share some motivation with others. The result has been my audience has motivated me. If you look for others that inspire you, your motivation will grow.

2. Places. I have always loved bodies of water. We have a large pond in our back yard. The ocean and beach access are only a 30-minute drive away. Being out in nature motivates my soul. Seeing wildlife in our yard or on the drive to town reminds me that God is in charge. This beautiful planet is always communicating if we open our eyes, ears, and hearts. Go to a place that inspires your creativity and you will feel renewed.

3. Projects. As adults the reality hits that if you want a clean environment you either have to hire it out or roll up your sleeves and get to work. Cleaning the oven, the other day made me think about how projects can keep us motivated. Motivation will keep you moving forward to reach your goals. When I first started cleaning the oven, I hit the button on the range for self-cleaning. I did this right before we had to leave to an appointment. The drips in the oven burst into flames. We realized we had to stop the self-cleaning function to avoid burning our house down. When I got back, I started over. First, I cleaned out the big drips and then restarted the self-cleaning function. Your goals may need to be restarted. If you start with defining your purpose then the motivation will be easy to tap. Now that the oven looks brand new, I’m motivated to tackle the next project.

Every day there is motivation that can help you reach your goals. All you have to do is look and be open to the gift awaiting you.

Positivity

If you want more positivity in your life then you can achieve that goal today by turning off the news! Yes it’s good to be informed, but if you get distracted from achieving your winning edge then avoiding the headlines is your key to success.

I realized this years ago. I was a news junkie. What I began to realize though is it was impacting my attitude and profitability. By turning off the news and focusing on positivity I am able to stay clear in my mind and heart. Light attracts light. Just as avoiding negative individuals paves the way to untapped potential. Positive individuals on the other hand should be your quest.

You always have a choice to seek out positivity or negativity. Think about today how negativity has thwarted your growth. Staying in a winning edge mindset will open your world of possibilities without end.

Try it today – turn off the news and let positivity flow freely into your life!

Linda’s Tips: Speaking Off the Cuff

Have you ever been asked a question by your boss and were caught off guard? Speaking off the cuff can be an art that is mastered. Practice makes perfect. The more you push past your comfort zone the better you will become at speaking off the cuff.

The tendency in responding to a question you are not expecting is to use crutch words such as: ah, um and you know. One of the best ways to respond to something that catches you off guard is to pause and collect your thoughts. After doing so and supplying your response it will center you and your thoughts. You will come across more knowledgeable and confident.

Toastmasters is a great organization to practice speaking off the cuff. You get to practice at each meeting through Table Topics. If you don’t have time to join a Toastmasters near you then have a friend or colleague fire questions at you that you are not expecting. Take a moment to pause and then respond.

You will become a pro at speaking off the cuff in no time!

Getting your hands dirty

dirtyhands
In order to be an effective leader, you need to be willing to get your hands dirty. Jordan Zimmerman in his book Leading Fearlessly states “… I don’t have to master every skill; I just need to understand them.”

In leading your team, they need to know your expectations. They need to see that you are not above “getting your hands dirty” if needed to accomplish what is expected. Whatever it takes is the attitude of the top leaders. The top leader isn’t always top management.

Years ago, I worked for a CEO in a small business with 4 employees. This CEO was going through a business transition. While going through this stressful time, he hurt his back. Because I saw his vision for the company and believed in it – I sacrificed my will and put aside the attitude of “that’s not in my job description” and went to work in creating as much value as I possibly could. Still to this day, he credits me with the praise that I was the one who kept his business going.

I knew a job had to be done – the company needed my energy, devotion and loyalty. It was rewarding to put aside my pride and add deep lasting value. A true leader will recognize your sacrifice. A true leader is willing to sacrifice all to reach a goal.

You can lead today in whatever situation you are in. Put aside pride and go to work. You will be respected and more opportunities will come your way. An effective leader understands that when things are going great – it took teamwork to drive success and the leader credits the team. You have the power within you to achieve more than you every thought possible.

Lead out and on!

Linda’s Tips: What is your body language saying?

What is your body saying about you? When you are conversing with others does your body language illustrate openness or is your body putting off negative closed signals? The way we use our body when trying to persuade someone to our ideas is critical to success.

As mentioned earlier, 93% of communication is non-verbal. 58% is represented by how we use our body to communicate. The way you hold your body also impacts how you view yourself. If you want to appear and FEEL more confident start watching your personal body language as you interact with others throughout your day.

You can increase your effectiveness as a leader by being aware of the non verbals you project. By being aware of what your body language is saying to others will be the key to unlock your next level to success. Are your ready to turn the key?
